Tamed
Smoks are tamed versions of their wild prehistoric self. A wild smok is very much like a Geyser, another gusher species of long body. Smoks became docile once they hit the apex species status of their homeland - they had nothing to fear and absolute no need to be aggressive, plus that they killed everything in their way until they, their prey and what feared them was left.
They lost their claws and teeth in this process and once humanoids arrived in their habitat they were already docile creatures. Literally every single smok was tamed and withnin 4 generations there were no wild smoks anymore.
Smoks have a strong bond with humanoids, feeling submisse, protective and loyal to them. Their love for humanoids is very similar to the inconditional love dogs have for humans. Smoks feel depressed when out of the "pet" status.
Smoks are friendly in general but they have different personalities, a smok can be extroverted and playful while another may be shy and reserved. They often "mimic" their owner's personality aspects due to blind respect and admiration.

Communication
Smoks make the same noises of a porcupine. This gives people the impression that they can talk or have a language, but it is all gibberish.
Due to their contact with humanoids, they may start making noises out of the blue, trying to mimic humanoid speech.

Other than porcupine "talking", smoks whistle to call attention. They use their lips to make kissing sounds to show affection.
Smoks can not change their facial expression and their ears are not that expressive so they rely in noise intonation and body language to express what they feel.
They do not have an universal body expression chart since most of their "body language" is developed so they can communicate with their owners, but if their feathers are up either they are weirded out, confused, or annoyed.
Excessive steam making may indicate strong emotions, dense steam may indicate annoyance/frustation.
If a smok blows steam rings, it probably is really bored.

Emotions
A smok shares the same emotional spectrum of a human.
However, due to their lack of inteligence, dealing with them is not as easy as it may be for a human. Smoks sometimes are like emotionally immature humans, when any happiness is THE BEST THING EVER and any sorrow is the end of the world.
Their emotional spectrum includes deep feelings such as hate, passion, love and well. The same things a human can feel.
They deal with hate better than humans tho.

Intelligence
They are smart, but not that much.
Smoks are aware of themselves, who they are, their existence and that their existence and actions influence and modify the world around them.
Smoks can understand time, and are able to rethink a decision by thinking about future outcomes. However, their thought on it is not advanced:
If we suppose that a smok has a box he wants to play with but his owners forbid it, he will understand his command.
A smok will think "box > angry owner > not do".
A smok will not think "if i play with this box i will destroy it and this will make my owner angry"
If the said owner is out, a smok will know they will return soon, so they will not play with the box even if the owner is not present.
A smok may misunderstand it and not play with any box shaped object, they can also misunderstand and think it is only wrong in said location. They are not that smart.
Smoks are able to form very archaic and simple thinking, conditional branches and time settings. Smoks can wonder simple questions such as "why jump". They most likely can not answer it themselves.
Their best thought is in solution finding. If a smok is able to understand certain puzzle's rules, it will decipher it easily. Like a rubrix cube. A smok could solve it in its first try. However, they will never understand what is the point of a rubrix cube, neither will be able to move it, and will most likely hide it from its owners as they see it as colourful angry maker object.

Relationship with other smoks
Smoks live with other smoks peacefully. If two smoks dislike each other, they will try to settle down their diferences by petting and even masturbating each other, if nothing works they will most likely avoid being in the same place.
Smok fights are rare, but they do happen. A smok never tries to kill another smok in a fight, but it will try to immobilise/tire the other.
This peaceful nature is related to they not having to compete for anything ever since before tamed. There are plentiful food, there are plentiful mates, and territory is always shared.
Smoks like to hang out in groups. Those can be best friends having fun, friends looking for mates, friends looking for other group of friends to have fun with, a family of related smoks, a mixed group of family and friends of a relative... eh.
A good note here is that smoks do not escape from their houses. They just want to have fun with other smoks sometimes, so they will look for another smoks around the neighboorhood. If you prohibit a smok from interacting with other smoks, either you depress it or it will act with you the same way it would act with a smok.

Relationships with other non-humanoid species
Smoks are usually indifferent to other species, prefering to leave them alone and wishing for them to do the same.
They usually see dogs and other pets as competition and their responsability. They are stern to them due to them feeling they are competition and at the same time they will take care and not harm them as they see other pets as their responsability. Like you and your snotty brat brother.
(Smoks protect and care about their cloud, and sadly other pets are part of their "cloud")
Some smoks are more used to other pets and will not see them as competition, but their indifferent attitude towards other species is a wall hard to break.
